More Goals Are Better Than Less?

Somehow another year has flown by and I’m excited to begin sharing training tips and guidance again. If you haven’t achieved every single thing you put down on your resolutions list last year don’t beat yourself up! We often imagine we can get far more done than is truly possible.

But to make sure we get the most out of the coming year and opportunities on the way I want to give you one simple piece of advice that has helped me tremendously.

By now most of us have heard that we should make our goals S.M.A.R.T. That means our goals should be:
Specific
Measurable
Achievable
Relevant
Time Bound

In other words each goal we set should be simple, something we can firmly know when it has been accomplished or not, within our limits of accomplishing it, and have a specific time frame for when it should be finished.

More Goals Are Easier Than Less

With this template in mind I want to suggest one additional aspect that seems counterintuitive at first. I believe we should create more goals rather than less. Smart goals are great, but they can also easily get too big. If the goal is to write a book by the end of the year that could technically fit into the SMART goal format. However, it is so big there is no place to start. In instances with big goals like this we need to break them down and have multiple Smart goals along the way.

So as you sit down to think about what you want to accomplish this year begin with those big goals in mind. Make sure they fit this SMART format. But then think about what time bound markers you need to hit along the way. Continue this process until you arrive at daily SMART goals that will get you to your larger end. These daily goals should almost feel too easy. Set yourself up for success each day and the momentum will carry you much further.

Look for Accountability

My last bit of advice? Grab a friend or coach to keep you accountable. One of the most effective strategies I’ve taken lately was partnering with a friend and coming up with small specific goals we wanted to accomplish each day. We checked in with each other to make sure we did it. What if we didn’t? Well then of course we peer pressured each other into a few burpees for the days we missed.
